New Project: pen at work!

When your world is turned upside down, you often make unexpected discoveries of strength and resilience. This summer I discovered three things:

First, my most popular post How I work – Why I photograph my morning cup of coffee kept me going, and I don’t only mean all the caffeine I’ve consumed! (Though it helped.) Having the habit, the morning ritual, it helped me pause, focus, and reflect. Giving me the strength to make it through stressful days.

Second, having documentation is important for your business and your personal life. I had to build my mother’s medical history and attempt to get paperwork quickly from her former physicians. I built what I could as quickly as possible and worked with every doctor we met with to fill in as much of the puzzle as possible.

Third, I like creating order from this sort of chaos.

What does that mean?

I will teach and share the methodology I use to find order in that chaos known as life. There will be worksheets, tutorials, tools, and eventually workshops. Want personalized attention? Yes, I will continue to offer one-on-one consulting.

It’s a project of PennyWise Consulting, and I’m calling it pen at work: prioritize · evaluate · negotiate, a PEN is all you need.

I have a not-so-secret weapon for getting things accomplished and it’s simple, I have an accountability partner. This individual acts essentially as a client for the well-being of my business and their role is to assist in my business development.

While Spring cleaning enjoys the majority of the marketing buzz, I find an autumn review useful as we return to routines after the carefree days of summer and many of my clients prepare for a busy holiday season.

3 questions to ask before choosing new technology

Interactions with potential clients often begin with them saying they need me to implement the x,y,z software solution for their business. They are surprised when I don’t immediately say “yes of course” but begin to ask questions to try to understand how and why they arrived at this specific decision. Yes they are the client and it is their budget, but my business goal is to help each client find the practical and appropriate technology solution for their specific needs. Their surprise increases when they hear my response of “no” after learning that they arrived on their decision simply because their direct competitor or a business they think is highly successful uses it.

3 quick tips to format your blog posts

A reoccurring question I receive from clients is about how to improve SEO and have great looking posts without devoting hours of their time. Content that has undergone thoughtful writing, editing, and formatting should be your priority. That process should enable to you recognize the key words that are useful for both readability and SEO! This post provides three of my tips for formatting a blog post for readability and effective SEO.

5 WordPress updates of interest

As always, there are updates! Is it important that you read the change logs? No. However, it is important to keep your WordPress system up-to-date. There are often new features that slip-in which can improve how you work. If you have questions or are worried about updating, please contact me!

Wordpress is at 4.8.3, this security release was released on October 31, 2017. It addresses a potential SQL injection bug.
Wordpress will soon be at 4.9, is due to be released next week! This version has focused on making it easier to customize your site.
WooCommerce is at 3.2.3 and was updated on November 2, 2017.
Yoast SEO is at 5.7.1 and was updated on October 25th, 2017. They've been busy updating the experience to make it easier to deal with SEO.
Jetpack is at 5.5 and was updated on November 7, 2017. This version is to prepare for WordPress 4.9. Recent updates have created new widgets to explore.
